Ulla Diedrichsen (b. 1950) considers herself a painter, although her practice is wide-ranging in media. Her works might include everyday materials with references to both her personal and the cultural history – our relationship with the surrounding world. Her paintings embody both bold colours and a dynamic, gestural style as well as strong graphic texture. This combined with an always existing black and white element is all characterizing the work of Ulla Diedrichsen.
With a career spanning 50 years, Ulla Diedrichsen is one of Denmark’s most recognized artists. She has exhibited and been in contact with some of the world’s most famous artists, such as when she engaged with Andy Warhol’s silkscreen prints at The Factory and Keith Harring’s Popshop in NY in the 80s. She has collaborated and exhibited with the legendary Viennese actionists, such as Herman Nitsch, Arnulf Rainer and Valie Export. She has exhibited and is represented with both photography, installation, graphics and painting at a number of art museums and collections in both Denmark and internationally, e.g. The International Polaroid Collection, Boston, Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, WestLicht, Museum for Photography, Vienna and here at Brandts, ARoS, Randers Kunstmuseum and most recently in 2024 at the Kunstmuseum GLAS.
